It is another star power in the United Nation's
cause for humanity. UNICEF is getting the support of beauty queen Salma Hayek for campaigning the eradication of tetanus in mothers and babies around the world.
Since the birth of her daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault, Hayek has worked to help mothers in developing nations worldwide, teaming up with Pampers and UNICEF to help stop the spread of life-threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus. She is the spokesperson for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership in the U.S. and Canada called: 1 Pack = 1 Vaccine to help raise awareness of this program.
Salma was moved to see the tetanus victims during her recent trip to the West African nation of Sierra Leone. She was reported to have said to the journalist at the United Nations, "One of the things that was very moving about the trip was to see a 15 year old girl, really young, taking responsibility for thier lives and thier children before they are born by saying' I am going to be healthy, I am going to take this vaccination."
The Pampers - UNICEF partnership has already provided over 50 million vaccines to mothers and babies in developing countries.
Hayek is the first Mexican national to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. She is one of the most prominent Mexican figures in Hollywood, since the legendary Dolores del Rio. She is also, after Fernanda Montenegro, the second of four Hispanics to achieve a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Earlier, On July 19, 2005 Hayek testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary supporting reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act. In February 2006, she donated $25,000 to a Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, shelter for battered women and another $50,000 to Monterrey based anti-domestic violence groups.
